Gerald was a nationally ranked junior from 1978-1982 and a national Doubles champ in 1981.  He then went to the University of California, Berkeley where he played collegiate tennis and his team was consistently ranked in the top 15 in the US.  He has taught tennis for all levels in Colorado, Hong Kong and California.  

Gerald founded the North Island Tennis Academy (NITA) because of his love for the sport and his interests in growing tennis in the region.  He believes the best way to achieve this is to focus on the kids.  He is very excited about the Canadian progressive tennis system (or USTA Under 10 tennis) which has generated new found interest in the sport globally primarily by allowing kids to begin tennis at a younger age.

Joan Newsome

Instructor

Joan is a certified instructor level coach with Tennis Canada.  Besides being an active tennis player for over 20 years, she has been teaching the kids programs at Westwood Tennis Club for over 5 years.  She specializes in the Tennis Canada Progressive Tennis programs.  She is also available for private lessons upon request.

Holly Calvin

Instructor

Holly has been a member of the Westwood Tennis Club for over 20 years and is a Tennis Canada Certified Instructor.  She has a bachelor of physical education degree from U.B.C.  She played competitive tennis as a junior in BC achieving various provincial rankings. She returned to tennis in her 30's and is now sharing her love of the game.  She plays tournaments all around the Island with her husband and loves to compete. She is teaching the fundamentals to adults and juniors through the North Island Tennis Academy (NITA), Nanaimo Parks and Recreation, and the Westwood Tennis Club.  She is also available as a hitting partner for players who would like to practice their skills.  She is a member in good standing of the Tennis Professionals Association of Canada.

Alan Oslie

Instructor

Alan was an accomplished high school tennis player in Ontario.  He has been coaching sports for 25 years.  In addition to tennis, he has coached minor hockey, baseball and golf to all ages.  His cross-sport experience and training gives him a unique perspective when coaching tennis which assists with articulating skills and strategy to players.  He has also run High Performance programs at NITA.  Alan is available for private and group lessons at Westwood and NITA.  He is Tennis Canada Certified and a Member of the Tennis Professionals Association (TPA).

Catherine began coaching about 15 years ago with the Bowen Park Junior Tennis Club.  She taught elementary school in Nanaimo for over 30 years and now uses her teaching skills on the tennis court.  She enjoys sharing her passion for tennis with young players.

Oliver Bellomi

Oliver recently completed an NCAA Div 1 tennis scholarship at St. Peter’s University in New Jersey.  He trained and competed at the Chris Evert Academy in Florida.  He is a former internationally and nationally ITF ranked player.  He is a Tennis Certified Instructor.  Oliver is available for private lessons as well as hitting sessions.
